AVID is an elective class for college-bound students who will be learning strategies to help them be more successful in all of their classes. This course will stress the following: focused note-taking, outlining, writing, oral communication, reading, critical thinking, test-taking strategies, cooperative learning, and self-awareness. In addition, the course includes college and career motivational activities, such as guest speakers and college field trips, as well as many opportunities for collaboration with the Sheldon High School AVID program. The AVID Curriculum focuses on Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) from the AVID Middle School Libraries, and through both teacher and tutor-led activities. Students are expected to be self-motivated and to have a strong desire to attend a four-year college after high school graduation.
AVID is an amazing program with amazing results! We look forward to your student becoming a part of the AVID family and community.
Sara Stephenson (AVID Coordinator & AVID 8) and Mariska Heath (AVID 7)

What AVID Is:
1. AVID is a program for students who are motivated to succeed, who have the desire and potential to do well in Honors courses but may need extra support to excel.
2. AVID students are hard workers and motivated.
3. AVID students have a positive attitude.
4. AVID students are able to work collaboratively with others.
5. AVID students are independently motivated to do well in school.
What AVID Is Not:
1. AVID is not for students who don't do their homework.
2. AVID is not for the consistently D or F student.
3. AVID is not for unmotivated students. They must have individual determination.
4. AVID is not an at-risk program. It is a program designed to support students who may otherwise not attend a four-year university to attend and to graduate from a four-year school. (AVID Press® 2014)
