A Day at T. R. Smedberg Middle School

Welcome to T. R. Smedberg Middle School . We know that the first couple of days at a new school can be pretty stressful. We know this can be pretty intimidating and you probably have a lot of questions. This is all natural. We all went through this and we survived. We thought we would help you out and give you a breakdown of a typical day in the life of a student. We hope this answers some questions and calms your nerves a bit. Once again, welcome and we hope you find this to be useful.

Morning
Make sure you set your alarm clock to allow enough time to get up, get dressed and eat a healthy breakfast. You will need a lot of energy for life at the middle school. If you are taking the bus, make sure you get to the bus stop with plenty of time to spare. You don't want to be late.

Classes and the Schedule
Your first class will begin at 8:20 am and you will have just 4 minutes to get to your first class. We have a 9 week block schedule and it can take a little time to adjust. It looks like this: Students take four classes during Quarter 1. When Quarter 2 starts, students take a new set of classes. During Quarter 3, students return to their Quarter 1 classes. During Quarter 4, students return to their Quarter 2 classes. One of these four classes is English which students have during all the terms.

We have two lunches here at Smedberg to serve all of the students. A student's lunch is determined by what class they have during period 4. Both lunches are 30 minutes. YOU MIGHT WANT TO BRING A BAG LUNCH THE FIRST WEEK. This will give you a little time to see how the lunch lines work. You can purchase food items in three places: The Cafeteria (or Speed Line), The Taco Line and the Snack Shack (Snack Items). Beware, the lines are long, so be prepared for a little wait.

For you entertainment at lunch we have a few options. The Blacktop will be open the second part of lunch. We also have Quad Games which feature music and fun competitions. Lastly, if you need a quiet place to read or study, the Library is open to serve you. A whole lot of stuff going on at lunch. When lunch ends, you once again have 4 minutes to get to your last class of the day.

End of the Day
The last bell will ring at 3:00 pm and all students will walk to the front of the school. If you have a ride, make sure you tell them to pick you up on the Smedberg side of the street. It is a little dangerous to cross the street. A whole lot of cars will be here to pick up their students. Please be safe.

Advocacy
You will go to this class every Monday at the beginning of the day for 20 minutes, This is when you will get all the information about the happenings at T. R. Smedberg Middle School. Advocacy will begin with announcements via the intercom. Listen closely because there is a lot of stuff going on and you will want to get involved. School-wide lessons are taught at this time.

Wednesday Advocacy/Clubs
You will go to this class every Last Start Wednesday at the beginning of the day for 35 minutes. This is when PBIS lessons will be taught. In Quarter 2 - 4, this class will be replaced by Clubs.

Extra Stuff
Remember, we don't have lockers so only bring the books that you need for that day. Don't fill your backpack with all of your textbooks if you do not need them on a daily basis. This will lighten your load and make life easier for you. Also, if you have any questions, ask someone. Go to the Snack Shack and ask the Activities Director. Go to the office and ask the office staff. Ask the campus supervisors, ask administrators, ask your teachers or ask a counselor. We are here to help you. Good luck and let us know if there is anything we should add to this form to help new students make a smooth transition.

And remember, "Today is a great day to be a Wolverine."
